Mom loved vegetable gardens. Everyone had one during WWII to supplement the food they were able to buy with their ration cards. They called them Victory Gardens. When I was 12, we moved to McHenry, Illinois, where Mom had a huge vegetable garden. We were out in the "country" you see, and that made all the difference in the world. We were 60 miles away from Chicago and it was as rural as you can get. We even had cows across the road---more about that later.
